Brr Rabbit!
Hopefully the cold January weather will be behind us! Especially since we will be in Katy horse showing for the next few weeks. Quite a difference from mild weather in Wellington, Florida where we horse showed for the month of January.
The Winter Equestrian Festival or Wellington are some of the stiffest competitions of the show year. The classes are large, and the quality of the horses and riders is high. I was so proud of all the MPH riders as they moved up in divisions, met competition and personal goals, and improved from day to day and week to week. Here are some of the highlights of our month in Wellington.
Winter Equestrian Festival
Premier Week:
Amelie Schaefer and Flower Power aka Faith were Champion in the Large Children’s Pony Hunter Division.
MJ Maestas and Perry were Reserve Champion in the 15-17 Equitation. This was MJ’s first time in the older age group.
WEF 1:
Margot Evans and Cordoba Z aka Cinco won the Pleasure Horse Class. Margot shared riding duties with Sarah Duhon on Cinco in the USHJA 2’-3” Hunter Division. Cordoba Z was Reserve Champion.
WEF 2:
Margot Evans and Cambastian aka Cam won a USHJA Hunter 2’ Junior/Amateur over fences.
WEF 3:
Amelie Schaefer and Flower Power aka Faith were Champion in the Large Children’s Hunter Division AGAIN.
Some other highlights included:
Delaney Husted and MJ Maestas had blue ribbon training rounds on SWS Charleston aka Charlie, Cha Ching aka Chips, Franco aka Frankie and Perry.
MJ made the call back in the ASPCA Maclay on her new horse Franco. She also had several scores in the 80’s in the age group equitation on Perry.

Horse Show Corner
In the Hunter division, the horses are judged on their manners and way of going. Here are some major faults that can occur in a hunter class and will adversely affect your placing:
- A refusal at the jump
- A circle on course
- A lowering of a jump
- Adding a stride in the line
- Leaving a stride out of a line
- Chipping a jump (adding a tiny stride)
- Trotting on course
- Picking up the wrong lead
- Missing a lead change
Happy Year of the Horse!
