Happy Spring!

Hope everyone had a relaxing spring break!  We are in the home stretch now, another school year almost finished.  Unbelievable!

Pin Oak Week 1

After Spring Break, it is Pin Oak season!  Here are the highlights of week 1.  Stay tuned for weeks 2 and 3.

Alice Tschirhart and Leonardo aka Leonard made their first show count.  On Saturday they were Reserve Champion in the Walk/Trot Hunters.  On Sunday they stepped up to Champion in the Walk/Trot Horsemanship.  They were just ahead of Bowen McKinney on her catch ride, Small Business aka Mimi.  Bowen and Mimi finished up in the Reserve spot.

Maddie Singer and Diego VSh aka Diego were Champion in the Short Stirrup Division.

Cheryl Lawrence and Esquire aka Squirrel picked up the win in the Walk/Trot under saddle. Caroline Molther rode Esquire to the Championship in the 2’-3” Pin Oak Hunters.

What about MJ Maestas?!  She took the win in the Junior/Amateur National Derby with Perry.  They finished on a score of 173.  MJ also rode Perry to second in the 3’-6” Junior Hunter Classic.  MJ had success in the Equitation Ring as well.  On Franco aka Frankie, she was Reserve Champion in the 15-17 Equitation Division along with winning the ASPCA Maclay.  MJ and Frankie also picked up a blue in the 1.10-Meter Clear Round.

Sam Marshall had a great start to her three weeks of showing.  On MTM So Fly aka Sophy she was Reserve Champion in the Small/Medium Children’s Pony Hunters.  Sam also had a good round on Sophy in the Children’s Pony Equitation over fences.  The pair placed first!  On Slow Hand aka Minty she stepped into the Low Children’s Hunters for the first time and took home a Pin Oak Blue!  Caroline Molther rode Slow Hand to a Reserve Champion tie with Margot Evens Cambastian aka Cam in the 2’-6” Pin Oak Hunter Division.

Speaking of Margot Evans, she and her new mount Thank you Robert aka Bob placed fourth in the Low Children’s Hunter Classic. This was Margot and Bob’s first show together!

Amelie Schaeffer and Flower Power aka Faith were Reserve Champion in the Large Children’s Pony Hunters.  They also picked up second place in the Children’s Pony Hunter Classic.  Ameli showed off her Equitation skills in the Children’s Pony Equitation on the Flat.  She brought home the blue.

Delaney Husted and Slick Sonic aka Slick won the EMO/USHJA 3’-3” Jump Seat Medal along with winning the 15-17 Equitation on the Flat.  Delaney and SWS Charleston aka Charley were fifth in the Junior 1.05-Meter Stake.

Annabel Grefe and Indigo aka Indie picked up a blue in the Younger Children’s Hunter over Fences.  The pair also finished in the top three of the Younger Children’s Hunter Classic.

Horse Show Corner

Jumpers are judged on not lowering a jump and jumping clean in the fastest time.  The three most common jumper classes are: 1) a jump off class; 2) a speed class; and 3) a power and speed class.

The jump off class consists of a first round.  If the exhibitor jumps fault free they move onto the jump off.  The winner is the horse that completes the course with the least number of faults in the fastest time.  In a table A class, the horse and rider will leave the ring after the first round.  When all competitors have completed the first round those that have qualified will return for the jump off in the original order of go.  Grand Prix’s are held as Table A classes.  In Table B classes the jump off takes place immediately after the first round.  The horse/rider combination does not leave the ring prior to the jump off.

A speed class is one round.  Whoever leaves the jumps up in the fastest time is the winner.

A power and speed class consist of two rounds, but the rider does not stop between rounds.  The first round, the power round is scored the same as a first round in a jump off class.  The horse must stay within the time allowed so as not to incur time faults.  They must also jump clean, no lowering of the jumps. Without stopping they will go on to the Speed portion of the class and once again the exhibitor that jumps clean and is the fastest is the winner.

Happy Mother’s Day!
