Horse Show Corner
Jumpers are judged on not lowering a jump and jumping clean in the fastest time. The three most common jumper classes are: 1) a jump off class; 2) a speed class; and 3) a power and speed class.
The jump off class consists of a first round. If the exhibitor jumps fault free they move onto the jump off. The winner is the horse that completes the course with the least number of faults in the fastest time. In a table A class, the horse and rider will leave the ring after the first round. When all competitors have completed the first round those that have qualified will return for the jump off in the original order of go. Grand Prix’s are held as Table A classes. In Table B classes the jump off takes place immediately after the first round. The horse/rider combination does not leave the ring prior to the jump off.
A speed class is one round. Whoever leaves the jumps up in the fastest time is the winner.
A power and speed class consist of two rounds, but the rider does not stop between rounds. The first round, the power round is scored the same as a first round in a jump off class. The horse must stay within the time allowed so as not to incur time faults. They must also jump clean, no lowering of the jumps. Without stopping they will go on to the Speed portion of the class and once again the exhibitor that jumps clean and is the fastest is the winner.
Happy Mother’s Day!
